Defensive driving in the cosmetics aisle

First Aired: May 18, 2014

Are your cosmetics safe? How can you tell? This two-part program focuses on the importance of protecting yourself from chemicals that may disrupt your endocrine system or increase your risk of getting cancer.

Our guest is John Mathis, a research clinician, oncology nurse, and a member of the American Holistic Nurses Association. He has concerns about the health impact of some cosmetics, and rightfully so. There are limited regulations for cosmetics, and most recommendations are not enforceable.

And, visit the Environmental Working Group’s Skin DeepĀ® database to learn more about products before you buy them. And, read EWG’s blog post, 1000 Chemicals, which shares concerns about the limits of chemicals being reviewed. Also consider the Whole Foods site on unacceptable ingredients.
