Building resilience during ‘unrequested change’

First Aired: January 5, 2014

We start off the new year with a program on building resilience – in particular during times of “unrequested change.” These events – whether a death, job loss or a cancer diagnosis – can rock our world. Dealing with the aftermath of such shocks involves a process of isolating the experience for what it is, identifying assumptions and beliefs that can be pivotal in helping us move ahead, and then identifying resources you have or need. Becky Sansbury, a consultant and former hospice chaplain, developed a three-step After the Shock™ process to help people move from reaction to resilience in any kind of disruptive time. She was inspired by post-traumatic growth research conducted by the Department of Psychology at the University of North Carolina in Charlotte.
