Support Groups

Even though cancer effects everyone differently, we can all learn from each other’s stories to gain strength and live life to the fullest. We are privileged to share a variety of local support groups for all those journeying with cancer.

Living with Metastatic/Advanced Cancer

1st and 3rd Wednesdays 3 pm – 4:30 pm

Facilitated by Sue Schneider PhD, RN, AOCN, Director of Duke Graduate Oncology Nursing Program. It is a place to share conversation and support with people living with metastatic cancer. Common issues include living each day to the fullest, dealing with emotions as they come up, managing symptoms, talking about difficult topics, and making plans in the face of an uncertain future. Each session begins with a specific topic and concludes with an open discussion on any topics of interest to that day’s participants. Free parking!

Support for People with Oral, Head and Neck Cancer (SPOHNC)

3rd Mondays  6pm – 7pm
Facilitated by Lee James, MS, LPC and Dr. Sharon Taylor

Lee has 10 years experience in community mental health, providing evidence based therapy and treatments via team modalities such as Assertive Community Treatment (ACTT) and Community Support (CST) to address the needs of the dually diagnosed in the community.  Lee specializes in Cognitive Behavioral Therapies (CBT), and is trained in Illness Management & Recovery (IMR), a model he seeks to implement in support groups here at Cornucopia.  Lee‘s first graduate school internship in the UNC Dept. of Rehabilitation Psychology & Counseling was in cancer support at UNC Lineberger Cancer Center.

Sharon is a medical oncologist who recently retired from Duke University and a two time, 18 year survivor of head and neck cancer.  She has a strong interest in using evidence-based complementary therapies along with conventional care in treating people with cancer and completed a fellowship in Integrative Medicine with Dr. Andrew Weil.  Sharon is also trained in medical hypnosis and acupuncture.  She looks forward to working with Lee James, MS, LPC, in continuing to support patients and caregivers going through cancer treatment and survivorship.

This support group is for cancer patients/survivors.  Free parking! Refreshments served.
